Employees of stock exchanges work only 5-days a week. Yes, you read it right. Stock exchanges are highly important to the economy and financial system, yet their employees work only five days a week. However, bank employees are still waiting for the implementation of a five-day banking week despite their long-standing demand.
The regular trading session for the NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex runs from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday through Friday, according to the NSE India Market Timings. Both the National Stock Exchange of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange have a formal 5-day work week policy with strict daily working hours.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) moved away from a 6-day week and formally implemented the 5-day week in 1986 as the Government of India shifted its administrative offices from a 6-day to a 5-day format in June 1985.
To align the Indian capital markets with global financial market standards and international trading centers (which strictly observed a Monday-to-Friday schedule), the Indian stock markets officially ceased regular Saturday trading and transitioned their organizational staff to a 5-day roster in 1986.
When the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was established later and commenced operations in 1994, it adopted the standard 5-day organizational and trading structure right from its inception.
However, bank employees have been fighting for a five-day workweek for decades, but it has not been implemented yet. Banks have reported huge profits, yet the demand for a five-day banking week continues to be denied.
