The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a warning for State Bank of India (SBI) customers after a fake message started circulating online. The message asks users to download and install an APK file to redeem SBI reward points.
PIB has clearly stated that SBI never sends links or APK files through SMS or WhatsApp. Such messages are part of an ongoing online scam. Customers have been advised not to click on unknown links or download any files sent through messages.
To help people identify the scam, PIB also shared a screenshot of the fake message, showing how fraudsters are trying to trick customers.
This is not the first time such a warning has been issued. Both SBI and the government have repeatedly alerted customers about similar scams. Just last month, SBI had warned users not to click on links or download APK files claiming to offer reward points. PIB has also posted several warnings on social media about fraudsters using such methods.
Online fraud cases are increasing rapidly. Scammers continue to find new ways to cheat people through messages, links, and phone calls. Despite repeated warnings, many customers still fall victim to these scams.
According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, bank frauds rose sharply to ₹36,014 crore in 2024–25, showing a 194 percent increase compared to the previous year. This highlights the need for greater awareness and caution while dealing with online messages and links.
