SBI Vacancy: 16000 Jobs to be released in State Bank of India

India’s largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), is set for a massive hiring and expansion drive. The bank will recruit around 16,000 employees in the current financial year, and plans to hire a similar number every year going forward, Chairman C S Setty has said.

Along with hiring, SBI will also open 200 to 300 new branches this year to improve customer service and expand its reach, especially in fast-growing areas.

According to Setty, SBI is targeting locations where banking services are still limited. “Even with such a large network, there are many new colonies and townships where SBI branches are not present. We don’t want to miss these opportunities,” he said. The bank is also using data to decide where new ATMs are needed based on rising footfall.

SBI’s bigger goal is to double its business size to ₹200 lakh crore in the next 6–7 years, from about ₹100 lakh crore projected in Q2 FY26.

The recruitment process is already near completion. “Around 16,000 new employees will join SBI this year, and we add almost the same number every year,” Setty confirmed.

As of March 2025, SBI had a total workforce of 2.36 lakh employees across different roles. About 28% of the staff are women. The bank’s employee cost also rose by 11% year-on-year to ₹36,837 crore in the first half of FY26.

To strengthen its rural and semi-urban presence, SBI is using its fully owned subsidiary State Bank Operations Support Services (SBOSS). This unit helps with government scheme applications, agriculture loans, small business support, and also monitors over 60,000 ATMs across the country.

SBI calls its ATM support staff “ATM Mitras.” These are local residents who take care of ATM availability, maintenance, and cleanliness. With approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), more than 20 activities can now be handled through outsourcing. SBI is also planning to deploy 6,000 people inside branches for floor coordination and customer assistance.
