SBI Deputy MD Amitava Chatterjee has been appointed as New MD&CEO of Jammu and Kashmir Bank
Srinagar: J&K Bank has announced the appointment of Amitava Chatterjee, currently Deputy Managing Director of the State Bank of India (SBI), as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Chatterjee will take over the role on December 30, 2024, succeeding Baldev Prakash, whose term concludes on December 29.
The bank’s Board of Directors approved the appointment during a meeting held on December 25, 2024. Chatterjee has been appointed for a three-year term, according to the regulatory filing issued by J&K Bank.
A Career Spanning Over Three Decades
Amitava Chatterjee brings with him over 30 years of extensive banking experience across diverse geographical regions and strategic roles. He previously served as the MD and CEO of SBI CAPS, the investment banking arm of State Bank of India.
During his illustrious career, Chatterjee also headed SBI’s operations in key positions, including Chief General Manager (CGM) of New Delhi and Jaipur Circles. His leadership in these roles involved managing high-profile clients, including Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), and Power Distribution Companies (DISCOMs).
About Amitava Chatterjee
Amitava Chatterjee began his career in 1990 as a Probationary Officer at State Bank of India (SBI). Currently serving as the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of Corporate and Commercial Group (CCG) at SBI, he previously held the position of Managing Director (MD) and CEO of SBI Capital Markets, the investment banking arm of SBI, for one year.
Chatterjee has extensive leadership experience, including heading SBI’s New Delhi Circle, which encompassed the National Capital Territory, Uttarakhand, Western Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Haryana. Under his leadership, this region operated nearly 1,700 branches and units, employing 17,000 staff members, and managing business operations worth ₹5 trillion.
He also oversaw SBI’s operations in Rajasthan for a year and has held senior roles such as Regional Manager, Deputy General Manager (Business & Operations), and General Manager in his 33-year career. Notably, he led the Bangalore Regional Office of the Mid-Corporate Group, catering to high-value clients like Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), and power distribution companies (DISCOMs).
Chatterjee’s diverse expertise spans various domains, including business development, risk and compliance management, human resource functions, and active participation in industry and government forums. His leadership roles have included overseeing SBI’s South Wing in the Mid-Corporate Group vertical and managing the Bidhan Nagar and Kolkata modules in West Bengal. An alumnus of Ranchi College with a B.Sc. degree, Chatterjee also holds an MBA from ICFAI Hyderabad.
Outside his professional life, Chatterjee is passionate about sports, especially cricket, tennis, and football. He has played district-level cricket in Jorhat and participated in various bank-level cricket tournaments.
