A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night resulted in the loss of 18 lives, including women and children, and left dozens injured. The chaos unfolded as thousands of passengers rushed to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela, putting security forces on high alert.

A Mother’s Strength: Duty and Love Together

Amid the turmoil, a heartwarming moment was captured—a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, Rina, was seen managing the massive crowd while holding her one-year-old child. Her unwavering dedication, balancing her professional responsibilities and motherhood, won the admiration of passengers, many of whom saluted her as a mark of respect.

Women like Rina are the true embodiment of strength, proving that they can handle both demanding careers and the responsibilities of motherhood with grace and determination. Her presence at such a critical moment reflects the resilience and commitment of women in uniform, who ensure public safety while also fulfilling their personal duties.

What Led to the Stampede?

Authorities revealed that a mix-up between train platforms triggered the deadly rush. The Prayagraj Special train arrived at Platform 16, while the Prayagraj Express was stationed at Platform 14. Confused passengers mistakenly thought their train had switched platforms, leading to a sudden stampede-like situation. The situation escalated further as three other trains to Prayagraj faced delays, causing extreme overcrowding.

Railways Orders Inquiry

The Ministry of Railways has ordered a high-level probe into the incident, stating that the unexpected surge in passengers created panic, causing some to faint in the crowded space. While eyewitnesses claim that a last-minute platform change announcement led to the disaster, the Railways has denied these allegations.

To investigate further, a two-member committee has been set up, comprising Narsingh Deo, Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Northern Railway, and Pankaj Gangwar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner of Northern Railway.

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for better crowd management and passenger safety measures at railway stations during large public gatherings. Meanwhile, women like Rina continue to inspire, proving that their dedication—both at work and home—remains unshakable.
