On Thursday (May 02) afternoon, an audacious robbery took place at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch located in K Salbung village in the Churachandpur district of Manipur. Masked individuals armed with firearms stormed the branch, firing several rounds into the air before looting approximately Rs 20 lakhs.

The incident occurred at around 2 pm when four assailants wielding sophisticated weapons entered the SBI office, instilling fear among both staff and customers with their gunfire. They proceeded to threaten employees at gunpoint, vandalizing strategically placed CCTV cameras and damaging certain machines within the premises. The perpetrators swiftly fled the scene, escaping towards Kangvai road in Churachandpur district of Manipur.

A rapid and extensive manhunt was launched by the police and central forces to apprehend the culprits and recover the stolen funds. This incident marks the second instance of such a robbery in the district in recent years, with the previous incidents occurring at an Axis Bank branch and another SBI branch in Churachandpur district.

Other Bank Robberies in India

Bank robberies are unfortunately not uncommon in India. In recent years, there have been several incidents of bank robberies across the country. For example, in Narsapuram town in West Godavari district, a masked and armed burglar looted Rs 6.5 lakh cash from the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in broad daylight. In Manipur’s Churachandpur district, criminals targeted an Axis Bank branch and looted electronic items worth nearly Rs 1 crore. These incidents highlight the need for increased security measures and vigilance in banks to prevent such robberies.
