Amritsar: In a shocking incident, two unidentified armed men looted ₹3.96 lakh from the HDFC Bank branch in Nawa Pind on Mehta Road on Friday morning. The robbery occurred despite heightened police vigilance ahead of the Municipal Corporation and Nagar Council elections scheduled for Saturday.
Details of the Robbery
According to the bank’s branch manager, Vikas Kalia, the incident took place at approximately 11:37 AM. Two individuals, one resembling a Sikh and the other with short hair, entered the bank with their faces covered. They brandished a revolver and threatened the cashier, forcing him to hand over the cash. The duo then fled the scene with the stolen money.
Police Investigation Underway
The local police have registered a case under Section 309(2) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Arms Act. Investigating Officer ASI Rashpal Singh stated that the police are analyzing CCTV footage from the bank and nearby areas to identify the culprits.
“We are working diligently to gather evidence and locate the suspects. The accused will be apprehended soon,” said ASI Singh.
Challenges in the Investigation
The police have admitted that their efforts to make a breakthrough have been hampered by their deployment for election-related duties. However, officials remain confident about resolving the case in the coming days.
The incident has raised concerns about security in the area, especially with such a daring robbery taking place in broad daylight. Residents have urged authorities to enhance safety measures and ensure swift action against the perpetrators.
