Chennai: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on Saturday due to a minor health issue. According to an official statement from the RBI, Das experienced acidity and was taken to the hospital for observation as a precaution.
“RBI Governor Shri Shaktikanta Das experienced acidity and was admitted to Apollo Hospital, Chennai, for observation. He is now doing fine and will be discharged in the next 2–3 hours. There is no cause for concern,” an RBI spokesperson said.
The central bank has assured that the Governor’s condition is stable, and he is expected to be discharged within a few hours.
Tenure Extension Likely for Das
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the government is considering a second extension of Shaktikanta Das’s tenure as RBI Governor. If approved, Das would become the longest-serving RBI Governor since the 1960s, surpassing the standard five-year tenure seen in recent decades.
Das, who assumed office in December 2018, has been instrumental in steering the RBI through challenging times, including economic disruptions and policy tensions. Known for his effective coordination with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Das’s leadership has earned praise for stabilizing the central bank and addressing economic challenges effectively.
His current term is set to end on December 10. If extended, Das will join the ranks of Benegal Rama Rau, who served as RBI Governor for 7.5 years between 1949 and 1957.
Sources indicate that no alternative candidates are being considered, and no selection committee has been formed, highlighting the government’s confidence in Das’s leadership. A potential extension, even for a year, would mark a historic milestone in the RBI’s history and cement Das’s legacy as a key figure in Indian monetary policy.
