On the 23rd of February 2024, a video emerged from a bank in Muzaffarpur, capturing the harrowing scene of Home Guard jawan Bhola Rai engaged in a fierce battle with four armed miscreants, utilizing his rifle in an attempt to thwart their criminal intent. Despite being in a situation reminiscent of a movie scene, Rai valiantly stood his ground, even as the criminals threatened him at gunpoint, and continued to confront them after sustaining gunshot wounds. His courageous actions ultimately safeguarded over one crore rupees stored within the bank.

Subsequently, when the police sought to acknowledge and honor his bravery, the bank offered a reward. However, after 23 days had passed since the incident, no one had stepped forward to assist him. Regrettably, the situation has forced Bhola Rai to mortgage his land to fund his treatment.

In a distressing turn of events, not only was separate assistance not provided, but the department also withheld his daily salary of Rs 774. Bhola, who is on duty 24 hours a day, is disheartened. With the cessation of his duty, the flow of income also ceased. He now seeks treatment from the government, prioritizing this over any accolades.

Despite risking his life, Bhola Rai was not recognized by the authorities. Similar stories of courage being disregarded have surfaced in Bihar, including the families of Home Guard soldiers Mukesh and Ramesh, who tragically lost their lives during a robbery at Punjab National Bank in Saran on April 13, 2023. While the government eventually provided some financial support after much struggle, the entire family was left devastated by the incident.

To understand the plight of Home Guard jawan Bhola Rai, a team from Dainik Bhaskar visited Dumariya village of Jamin Mathia Panchayat in Muzaffarpur, 100 km away from Patna. Here, they met Bhola Rai, whose condition is critical after sustaining a gunshot wound. He is unable to walk unaided and experiences tremors in his hands and legs. Recalling the events of February 23, 2024, Bhola Rai described facing five armed miscreants at the bank, where he valiantly resisted their attempts to snatch his rifle. Despite being struck on the head with a pistol, he refused to relinquish the weapon. Even after being shot in the thigh, he continued to confront the criminals, preventing them from carrying out a robbery. He expressed regret that despite risking his life, the government has failed to provide him with adequate medical treatment.

Bhola Rai emphasized that his primary concern is not for awards and honors, but rather for the government to ensure his proper treatment. Despite spending over 50,000 rupees on medical expenses, he remains unwell, experiencing dizziness and instability. He lamented the lack of support, revealing that even his modest farming land has been mortgaged for Rs 50,000. Additionally, his daily salary has been discontinued, further exacerbating his financial strain.

Moreover, Rai expressed disillusionment with the false assurances from the department regarding continued financial support despite the cessation of his duties. He revealed the distressing reality of the plight of Home Guards, highlighting the lack of a support system and the futile nature of empty promises. Despite receiving a nominal sum of Rs 5,000 from the bank manager, the police department has not provided any assistance. With his tenure of service winding down and the need for recuperation paramount, Rai faces an uncertain future, compounded by financial difficulties and the potential loss of his remaining land.
