Unidentified armed robbers who looted Rs 18.85 crore from a PNB bank in Viewland Ukhrul on November 30 are suspected to have fled towards the Indo-Myanmar border through the Ukhrul-Jessami Road along NH-202.
Sources said a villager in Sihai Khullen was forced to drop the robbers off at the Indo-Myanmar international border pillars 124-126 in his Mahindra Bolero camper. The international border is approximately 30km from Sihai village by a kuccha road.
The driver was apprehended by police at 7am on Saturday from his residence in Sihai Khullen, and questioning is on. It has also come to light that at 7pm on November 30, the robbers demanded that the owner of the Bolero camper drive them to Sihai Kahaophung, 10 km from his house. The driver dropped them off at Sihai Kahaophung and didn’t return until after 8 pm.
A group of armed miscreants looted Rs 18 crore from the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch in Ukhrul district, Manipur, on Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 5:47 PM IST when the bank manager and staff were closing the main gate after finishing their daily transactions.
They threatened the staff and confined them along with the security personnel inside the bank’s washroom. Under threat, a senior staff member opened the vault, allowing the robbers to loot the money. Authorities are examining CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
