Independence Day is celebrated annually on 15 August as a public holiday in India commemorating the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947. In his 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined new economic and security initiatives. PM Modi delivered his longest ever Independence Day speech, extending to a duration of 103 minutes. This was the longest speech delivered by any Prime Minister in India’s history.
Here are the top announcements from PM Modi’s 79th Independence Day speech:
- GST Reforms by October 2025 – One of the most anticipated measures is the revamp of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), scheduled for implementation by October 2025. The revised structure will lower tax rates on essential goods and streamline slabs to provide relief to households and small businesses.
- ₹1 Lakh Crore Youth Employment Scheme – To address youth unemployment, the government has launched the ₹1 lakh crore Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana. The scheme will offer a one-time incentive of ₹15,000 to first-time job seekers in the private sector, with an estimated 3.5 crore beneficiaries.
- Indigenous Semiconductor Chips – In the technology sector, India’s first indigenous semiconductor chips are expected to enter the market before the end of 2025, reducing dependence on imports and boosting the country’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
- Mission Sudarshan Chakra for Security – For national security, Mission Sudarshan Chakra was announced — a decade-long programme deploying indigenous technology to protect strategic, civilian, and religious sites nationwide, with completion targeted for 2035.
- Review of the Indus Water Treaty – On the international front, the government will review the Indus Water Treaty to safeguard India’s water rights, citing its potential impact on agriculture.
- Clean Energy Milestone Achieved Early – In the field of renewable energy, India has already achieved its target of generating 50% of electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of the 2030 deadline.
- Tribute to the Armed Forces – Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commended the armed forces for the success of Operation Sindoor in Jammu and Kashmir, praising their role in strengthening national security.
‘Sudarshan Chakra’ – India’s New Shield for the Skies
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that India will create ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, a multi-layered security system to protect the country from enemy attacks, including missiles and terrorist strikes. The system will combine advanced surveillance, cyber security, and physical protection to safeguard both citizens and important infrastructure.
It will be similar to Israel’s Iron Dome and the United States’ proposed Golden Dome, which work as missile defence shields. India already has a defence network called the Integrated Air Command and Control System, which successfully blocked Pakistan’s missiles for almost 100 hours during Operation Sindoor. However, Mission Sudarshan Chakra will go beyond just stopping missiles — offering a stronger, more advanced shield for the nation’s security.
PM Modi Warns Against Threats from Illegal Immigrants, Announces Demographic Protection Mission
On the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of a “Demographic Mission” aimed at protecting citizens from dangers posed by illegal immigrants. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, he warned of an alleged conspiracy to deliberately change the country’s population structure.
The Prime Minister claimed that these illegal immigrants were taking away job opportunities from Indian youth, targeting women and girls, misleading tribal communities, and illegally occupying land. He stressed that such actions would not be tolerated.
Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge Miss Independence Day Event at Red Fort; BJP Criticises Absence
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge did not attend the Independence Day celebrations at Delhi’s Red Fort this year, prompting political chatter about their absence.
While neither the Congress party nor the leaders issued an official explanation, party sources hinted that Rahul Gandhi skipped the event because he was reportedly unhappy with last year’s seating arrangement.
Both leaders, however, marked the occasion by posting tributes to India’s freedom fighters on social media and extended greetings to citizens on the 79th Independence Day.
Rahul and Kharge absence from Independence Day celebrations means they have no respect to our country and they are not citizens of this country India.
They are the behind the scene so called politicians who want to destroy the country and its people to gain power. They are not for the people of the country but for themselves & power.
