Police have arrested Vishal Kumar, a part-time housekeeper accused of stealing ₹4.33 lakh from the currency chest of Punjab National Bank. ₹20,200 was also recovered from him.
The counterfeit notes in the chest were discovered during the investigation into the theft. ₹111 crore was sent from the currency chest to the RBI, Jaipur, on August 5th.
These included mutilated, torn and other notes. 4.33 lakh rupees were found missing from the count. When the investigation began, part-time housekeeper Vishal Kumar was seen taking out notes from the bundles in the CCTV footage.
During the same investigation, fake notes worth Rs 17.29 crore were also recovered from the chest. On August 29, PNB’s chief manager Arun Kumar Choubey had given separate FIRs in the cash theft and fake notes cases. Vishal Kumar was named in the theft case.
In the case of finding fake currency notes, PNB’s Divisional Manager Ravi Kumar Kanse, Currency Chest Manager Sushil Kumar and Jagadhri Currency Chest Manager Amit Kumar, who was posted in the chest till a few days ago, were named. After this, all three were suspended. The case is now being investigated by the NIA. Amit Kumar has been arrested. The remaining two accused are absconding.
