The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has recently made an announcement regarding a toll hike for national highways in the country. Starting from Monday, there will be an average increase of 5 percent in toll rates. These revised rates were initially planned to be implemented on April 1, but were postponed due to the Lok Sabha elections.

According to a senior official from NHAI, the new toll rates will now take effect from June 3, 2024. This annual revision of toll rates is based on changes in the wholesale price index (CPI)-based inflation, which influences the adjustments made to user fees.

India has an extensive network of national highways, consisting of approximately 855 toll plazas. Out of these, around 675 toll plazas are funded by the government, while the remaining 180 are operated by concessionaires. The toll hikes are part of an annual exercise conducted under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.

This update from NHAI provides important information regarding the toll hike and its impact on national highways in India.
