The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the investigation into a high-value bank robbery that took place at a Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch in Manipur nearly two years ago. The robbery, which involved a sum of ₹18.85 crore, occurred on November 30, 2023.

Background of the Robbery

According to authorities, the robbery was allegedly carried out by armed operatives of the Eastern Flank of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), led by P. Joseph. The group reportedly planned the heist to finance the purchase of sophisticated weaponry, aiming to strengthen their strategic position in Myanmar.

Arrests and Police Action

On July 30, 2025, the Nagaland police arrested three members of the NSCN-IM, including the group leader P. Joseph, in Dimapur. The following day, the arrested individuals were handed over to the Manipur police for further investigation.

NIA’s Role

The NIA’s takeover of this case indicates the seriousness of the robbery and its links to organized insurgent activities. By taking control, the NIA aims to conduct a thorough and coordinated investigation, ensuring that the culprits are brought to justice and measures are taken to prevent similar crimes in the future.
