Meet 34 year old Mira Murati who is the new interim CEO of ChatGPT’s OpenAI

Recently Sam Altman has been sacked as the CEO of OpenAI and Mira Murati has been appointed as the new interim CEO of OpenAI.

Mira Murati was born on 16 December 1988. She is an Albanian engineer and business executive. She joined OpenAI in 2018, serving as the CTO of the company, and as of 17 November 2023, is the interim Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, replacing Sam Altman.

“She possesses a remarkable ability to assemble teams that embody technical expertise, commercial acumen, and a deep appreciation for the significance of mission,” wrote Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO

Early Life and Education

Murati was born in 1988 in Vlorë, Albania, to Albanian parents. At the age of 16, she left Albania to attend Pearson College UWC (United World College) on Vancouver Island, Canada, from which she graduated with an International Baccalaureate diploma in 2007.

For her undergraduate education, Murati attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, on a Davis-UWC Scholarship; while there she was selected for the school’s five year, dual degree program in engineering with Dartmouth College. In 2012, she graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth and a Bachelor of Arts from Colby.

Career

Murati started her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011, and worked at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013. She spent three years at Tesla as a senior product manager of Model X before joining Leap Motion.

She then joined OpenAI in 2018, later becoming its chief technology officer, leading the company’s work on ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex and overseeing the company’s research, product and safety teams.

On November 17, 2023, Murati took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman.

She is an advocate for the regulation of AI, arguing that governments should play a greater role “in aligning on some basic safety standards for deployment of these models.

At the helm of OpenAI’s technology division as Chief Technology Officer since May 2022, Mira Murati, 34, has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s strategy of openly testing and refining its AI tools.

Under Murati’s guidance, OpenAI has successfully translated academic research into practical products, democratizing access to AI and fostering widespread public interest in this transformative technology. Her leadership, coupled with a team of exceptional researchers and engineers, has propelled OpenAI to the forefront of AI innovation, making AI more accessible and impactful for the world.
