There is a big good news for government employees in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to double the special casual leave for government employees from 15 to 30 days per year.

This decision replaces an outdated policy and will support employees in a lot of ways. With more leaves, now Employees can participate more in sports and athletic events. Their participation in sports will be recognized as official duty rather than deducting it as leave.
This decision is especially in view of Government Employees taking part in sporting events of National/International importance, the period of the actual days on which they participate in the events and also the time spent in travelling to and from such tournaments events will be treated as ‘on duty’. This is to also encourage athletes who are Government Employees to train for the upcoming National Games to be hosted by Meghalaya in 2027.
Announcing the decision, Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh stated, “The previous arrangement allowed only 15 days of special casual leave, which has now been deemed outdated.” He emphasized that the revised policy aligns with modern needs, particularly as Meghalaya prepares for major sporting events.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to sports, Lyngdoh added, “Government employees participating in games and athletic meets will have their participation period treated as official duty, not as leave.”
With the state preparing for the upcoming National Games, the decision is expected to encourage greater participation from government employees in sports while strengthening Meghalaya’s readiness. “This will also help the state meet various requirements, especially with the National Games ahead,” Lyngdoh noted.
