A major fire broke out on the sixth floor of the Bank of India Building near Shagun Chowk on Laxmi Road in Pune on Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026.
The fire destroyed office equipment, electrical wiring, and other items kept inside the premises of bank. Fire brigade officials said no casualties were reported.
The Pune Fire Brigade control room received a call about the fire at around 10:11 am, following which seven fire tenders and three water tankers from Central, Kasba, Erandwane, Naidu and Kondhwa fire stations were rushed to the spot. Fire brigade personnel spotted the fire in the hall on the sixth floor of the RCC building on busy Laxmi Road. The building was immediately evacuated upon detection of fire.
The hall was divided into four offices by plywood partitions. The premises also included a battery backup room. According to the fire brigade, computers, tables, chairs, air-conditioners, electrical wiring, batteries, printers, photocopiers, and other office equipment were severely damaged in the fire.
Damage due to Fire
- Area Affected: An 80-by-80-foot administrative hall on the sixth floor divided by plywood partitions, including a battery backup room.
- Damaged Items: Computers, air conditioners, wiring, office furniture, and batteries were extensively damaged.
- Bank Operations: The main bank branch on the first floor was unaffected. Customer cash, lockers, and core banking documents remained fully secure, and banking services resumed shortly after.
- Cause: Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have originated in an AC unit, though official investigations continue.
