In a move to protect the city’s trees and uphold environmental regulations, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a Nigdi resident, Sanjay Tiwari, for wrapping multiple artificial lights around trees in front of his bungalow.

The complaint, filed by PCMC Assistant Garden Superintendent Rajesh Vasave, alleges that Tiwari’s actions have caused damage to the trees and violated the Defacement of Property Act and environmental norms.

While the FIR has been welcomed by some, environmental activists have expressed disappointment that Tiwari was not booked under the stricter provisions of the Protection & Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.

Prashant Raul, a prominent green activist, has urged the PCMC to take stricter action against those who harm the city’s trees. He pointed out that the increasing use of artificial lights for decorative purposes poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of trees.

The PCMC has assured that it will continue to take firm action against those who violate environmental regulations and harm the city’s natural resources. Residents are also encouraged to report any such violations to the authorities promptly.
