The Government of India has extended the last date to choose the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) by three more months. Now, eligible individuals can opt into the scheme till 30th September 2025, instead of the earlier deadline of 30th June 2025.
What is the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)?
The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is a new pension option for certain Central Government employees. It was officially notified by the Ministry of Finance on 24th January 2025 (Notification No. F. No. FX-1/3/2024-PR).
This scheme is being implemented under the National Pension System (NPS), and its operations are governed by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). The rules for running this scheme were released by PFRDA on 19th March 2025.

Who Can Opt for This Scheme?
The following people are eligible to choose this pension scheme:
- Currently serving Central Government employees
- Former (retired) Central Government employees
- Legally married spouses of Central Government employees who passed away after retirement
What Was the Original Deadline?
Originally, these eligible individuals were given three months — till 30th June 2025 — to make their decision to opt into the UPS.
Why Has the Date Been Extended?
Many employees and stakeholders had requested the government to extend the deadline, as more time was needed to:
- Understand the benefits of the scheme
- Arrange required documents
- Make an informed decision
Listening to these requests, the Government of India has agreed to extend the deadline by three more months.
New Deadline: 30th September 2025
Now, all eligible employees, retirees, and spouses of deceased retirees have time till 30th September 2025 to opt for the Unified Pension Scheme.
