Can you believe – Rs 1.39 crore has been stolen from ATM in Kanpur in just 33 days. Yes this is true. In a shocking case of ATM fraud, a group of criminals managed to steal Rs 1.39 crore from a bank in just 33 days by manipulating the ATM deposit process. This incident took place in Kanpur, and the fraudsters targeted Bank of Baroda ATMs located in Kidwai Nagar and Sisamau areas.
How the Fraud Happened
According to the police, the fraudsters used a clever trick to steal money. They acted as if they were depositing cash into the ATM machines. However, after placing the money inside, they used a special key to open the ATM’s cash tray and secretly took the money back. This illegal activity went unnoticed for over a month—from March 21 to April 24, 2025. When the bank noticed that the cash balances were not matching during their internal audit, they filed a complaint at the Kidwai Nagar police station.
The police started examining the CCTV footage of the ATM machines. After analyzing the video, they identified the suspects and arrested three individuals on Wednesday. During the investigation, the police recovered Rs.19.15 lakh in cash, ATM keys, a car used during the crime.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South, Deependra Nath Chaudhary, revealed that the person who filed the complaint was Ghanshyam Omer, the Assistant Manager at Hitachi Payment Services—the company responsible for depositing cash in the bank’s ATMs. The police found that a total of ₹1,38,91,500 was stolen from the Bank of Baroda ATM in Kidwai Nagar’s G Block.
Further investigation led the police to the main accused, Deepak Jaiswal, a resident of Maksudabad, Bithoor. He worked as a custodian for Hitachi Payment Services, giving him access to the ATMs.
After being taken into custody, Deepak confessed to the entire scheme. He admitted that they deposited money into the ATM, then removed it using a key, and later transferred the money to 15 different bank accounts. From there, the money was withdrawn using debit cards linked to those accounts.
The investigation is continuing and more details will be released soon.
