The District Consumer Commission in Jaipur has issued an order to confiscate the property of ICICI Bank. This action comes after the bank failed to comply with previous rulings related to a medical insurance claim. The order was passed by the President of the District Consumer Commission, Vinod Kumar Saini, and member Ashok Sharma. The Commission has sent a letter to the District Collector for recovery proceedings to begin.
This decision is a result of a contempt petition filed by Vandana Bohra. According to reports, Vandana Bohra had taken a medical insurance policy through ICICI Bank. When she required treatment for heart disease, the expenses ran into lakhs of rupees. However, when she approached the bank for the insurance claim, the bank refused to cover her medical expenses.
In 2012, Vandana filed a complaint with the Consumer Commission. After reviewing the case, on February 1, 2012, the Commission ordered ICICI Bank to pay her Rs. 9.50 lakh along with an interest of nine percent. Additionally, the bank was fined Rs. 10,000 for its negligence.
The bank challenged this decision and appealed to the State Commission. However, the State Commission rejected their appeal on April 17, 2015. The bank then took the matter to the National Commission, but in May 2018, the National Commission also dismissed the appeal, upholding the original order.
Despite these rulings, ICICI Bank has yet to comply with the payment order. Frustrated by the delay, Vandana Bohra filed a contempt petition, requesting that the bank’s property be auctioned and the due amount be paid to her.
After hearing the petition, the District Consumer Commission has now ordered the confiscation of ICICI Bank’s property to recover the outstanding payment. This strong action emphasizes the Commission’s commitment to enforcing its rulings and protecting consumer rights.
