In a major relief for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26. The original due date of 31st July 2025 has now been extended to 15th September 2025.

This decision comes in response to the significant updates introduced in the newly notified ITR forms for the current assessment year. According to CBDT, these changes aim to make tax filing simpler, improve transparency, and ensure accurate reporting. However, the updates also require additional time for the development, testing, and rollout of the updated filing systems and utilities.

One of the key reasons behind the extension is the time needed to integrate new features and enable smooth user access to the updated return forms. Also, credits related to Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), which are based on filings due by 31st May 2025, are expected to reflect only in early June. Without the extension, this would have left taxpayers with very little time to file their returns accurately.

CBDT said the extension will provide enough time for both taxpayers and the system to adapt, helping avoid last-minute rush and errors. It also addresses concerns raised by tax professionals and other stakeholders who had flagged the practical difficulties posed by the recent changes.

A formal notification regarding this extension will be issued separately by the department.

This move is expected to ensure a smoother, more accurate ITR filing process and give everyone sufficient time to comply with the new requirements.
