The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case of disproportionate assets against Senior Passport Superintendent Deepak Chandra, accusing him of earning more money than what his legal sources of income could justify. Deepak Chandra worked in the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, from 2018 to 2024. During this period, his income allegedly increased by 146.43%, raising suspicions of corruption.
The allegations against Deepak Chandra highlight concerns about corruption in public service.
The investigation began after a confidential complaint was filed against Deepak Chandra, which prompted the CBI to start looking into his financial activities. The CBI registered the case and carried out a confidential search at his residence, located in Rajnagar Extension, Ghaziabad. Although the investigation is ongoing, CBI officials have not publicly shared detailed comments on the matter.
Allegations of Corruption
Deepak Chandra was stationed in Ghaziabad for six years, during which time he allegedly engaged in corrupt practices. According to CBI findings, his total income during his tenure as Passport Superintendent amounted to ₹1.43 crore. This income was ₹85.06 lakh higher than what he could have earned legally from his job.
Deepak Chandra is the son of Ramesh Prasad Yadav and hails from Patna, Bihar. He joined the passport department in 2015 as an Assistant Superintendent with a grade pay of ₹4,200. The CBI investigation also revealed that Deepak made a significant financial transaction during his posting. He paid the booking amount for his flat on July 30, 2018, and continued to deposit money into his bank accounts until November 2024.
What Happens Next?
As the case unfolds, the CBI is likely to examine the sources of Deepak Chandra’s income and investigate whether his assets were acquired through illegal means. The case of disproportionate assets is serious, as it implies that Deepak may have been involved in corrupt practices to amass wealth beyond his official salary.
The CBI’s investigation aims to uncover whether there is concrete evidence of wrongdoing. If the charges are proven, it could lead to strict legal action against him. For now, the case remains under investigation, and more details are expected to emerge as the probe continues.
