The Government introduced the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) as an additional benefit option under the National Pension System (NPS) for eligible Central Government employees. As per the eligibility criteria, 25,756 retired Central Government employees are entitled to receive benefits under UPS.

These include those who have either superannuated, retired under Fundamental Rule 56(j), or passed away on or before 31st March 2025, after completing at least 10 years of qualifying service under the NPS.

As of 20th July 2025, a total of 7,253 claims have been received, out of which 4,978 have been processed for payment. UPS has been made available only for Central Government employees covered under NPS, and there is currently no proposal to extend it to other pension schemes or sectors.

In response to demands from employees and associations, the government extended the deadline to opt for UPS by three months, up to 30th September 2025. Further, employees opting for UPS will also be eligible for retirement and death gratuity benefits under the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under NPS) Rules, 2021.

In cases of death during service or discharge due to disability or invalidation, such employees can also choose benefits under the CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021 or the CCS (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2023. Additionally, the government has granted tax benefits to UPS, similar to those already available under NPS as per the Income Tax Act, 1961.
