India’s successful Chandrayaan-3 moon mission, costing approximately Rs 600 crore, could have been funded twice over by the revenue generated from selling scrap such as files, condemned office equipment, and obsolete vehicles. The latest government report reveals that nearly Rs 1,163 crore have been earned through scrap sales since October 2021, with an impressive Rs 557 crore generated during a one-month campaign in October of this year.
Cleanliness Impact:
- The drive for cleanliness in government offices, spearheaded by PM Narendra Modi and led by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, has significantly impacted the working environment.
- A staggering 96 lakh physical files have been eliminated from central government offices since October 2021.
- Approximately 355 lakh square feet of space has been freed, allowing for repurposing, including recreation centers and other useful applications.
Financial Impact:
- The revenue figure of Rs 1,163 crore underscores the success of the government’s cleanliness program.
- Out of this, the Ministry of Railways alone earned nearly Rs 225 crore, followed by the Defence Ministry at Rs 168 crore, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Rs 56 crore, and the Coal Ministry at Rs 34 crore.
Space Utilization:
- A total of 164 lakh square feet of space has been freed this year, with the Ministry of Coal leading at 66 lakh square feet, followed by the Ministry of Heavy Industry at 21 lakh square feet and the Defence Ministry at 19 lakh square feet.
File Management:
- This year, nearly 24 lakh files were eliminated, with the Ministry of External Affairs leading at 3.9 lakh files, followed by the Department of Military Affairs at 3.15 lakh files.
- Overall, e-file adoption has grown to nearly 96% in the government, showcasing the impact of the cleanliness campaign.
Campaign Success:
- The Special Campaign 3.0 for cleanliness and reducing pendency has been hailed as India’s largest-ever campaign in office spaces.
- Conducted in 2,58,673 offices globally, the month-long campaign resulted in freeing up 164 lakh sq ft of office space, eliminating 24.07 lakh physical files, and earning revenues of Rs 556.35 crore from scrap disposal.
Institutionalization of Practices:
- The success of the campaign has led to plans for institutionalizing swachhata practices in the government, with three hours per week devoted to cleanliness activities.
