Gold Worth Rs.42 Lakh Stolen from Canara Bank in Baghpat, Case filed against Bank Peon

A case has been registered against a peon after a Crime Branch investigation into the theft of 611.13 grams of gold worth ₹42 lakhs from a Canara Bank branch in Baghpat.

In a complaint to the police, Rajesh Kumar, Senior Manager of the Canara Bank branch, stated that Syndicate Bank merged with Canara Bank on August 7, 2023. On August 12, the gold jewelry pledged as collateral for loans at the Canara Bank branch on Delhi Road was inspected. On August 27, the gold jewelry, computers, printers, and documents from the Canara Bank branch were transferred to the branch at Rashtriya Vandana Chowk. On September 17, during an audit of the gold and other items, it was discovered that 611 grams of gold pledged by nine customers for loans taken between June 2022 and June 2023 were missing.

An internal committee of the bank conducted an investigation and questioned the officials and staff who had access to the double lock room, but the culprit was not identified. After receiving a complaint, the Crime Branch investigated the matter and reviewed CCTV footage from the time of the transfer. Following the investigation, the Kotwali police registered a case against the bank’s peon, Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Khirni Wali Gali, Gurana Road, Baraut. Circle Officer (CO) Harish Bhadauria stated that further action would be taken based on the investigation.

During the bank’s relocation, the stolen gold belonged to customers: Matin (33.6 grams), Mohammed (95.02 grams), Ajay Kumar Goswami (96.79 grams), Naushad (123.24 grams), Gaurav Kumar (68.95 grams), Monika Sharma (10.87 grams), Ruby Tyagi (80.63 grams), Tarun Verma (91.04 grams), and Sajid (11.43 grams).

Senior Manager Rajesh Kumar mentioned that once the theft was discovered, a list of officials and employees with access to the double lock room was prepared, and they were questioned. Those interrogated included Akash Tomar, Adarsh Vajpayee, Ashish Agarwal, Neelam Pandey, Subodh Kumar, Suhail Malik, Rajesh Kumar, Ashish Kumar, Kushagrpal, Pramod, Mukesh Kumar, Poonam, Rajbala, and Kapil Kumar.
