A shocking case of locker theft has come to light at Canara Bank’s Pali Hill branch in Khar West, Mumbai. A 59-year-old woman named Yojna Anand, who lives in the Khar West area, has reported that gold and silver ornaments worth ₹8.81 lakh were stolen from her bank locker.
What Happened?
According to the police complaint, Yojna Anand and her husband, Shivkumar Anand, have a joint account at Canara Bank’s Pali Hill branch. They had also a locker in the bank, where they kept their valuable gold and silver jewellery.
On May 16, Yojna had last visited the bank to check her locker. At that time, all the jewellery was safe inside. However, she didn’t visit the bank for the next several days because she was unwell. When she finally went back to the branch on Thursday at 10 a.m., she was shocked to find that all her gold and silver ornaments were missing.
What Items Were Stolen?
As per the bank customer, following items were stolen:
- 4 gold rings
- 2 gold bangles
- 4 gold bracelets
- 5 small rings
- A pair of diamond earrings
- 2 gold chains
- 2 silver glasses
- 2 silver bowls
- 2 silver spoons
- A silver plate
- 2 pairs of silver anklets
All these ornaments together are estimated to be worth around ₹8.81 lakh.
In her complaint, Yojna stated that someone might have used a fake or duplicate key to open the locker without permission. She immediately contacted the branch manager to understand how such a thing could happen, but she claims that the bank did not give a satisfactory explanation.
Police Action
Following her complaint, the Khar Police Station registered a case of theft under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code. The case has been filed against an unknown person, and police are now investigating the matter. CCTV footage, bank staff records, and locker access logs are expected to be checked as part of the inquiry.
Bank lockers can be opened with two keys – one by locker holder and one by the Bank officer. So even if somebody used duplicate key, without second key from Bank it cannot be opened.
Rightly said . This kind of theft is not possible
