What Finance Minister said about 5 Day Banking?

At a recent event, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was engaged in an interaction with a PHD student who was conducting research on work-life balance within the banking industry. The student, who had chosen the banking sector as her research area, took the opportunity to question the Finance Minister about the potential implementation of a 5-day work week in banks. You can watch the video of incident given below.

During the exchange, the student expressed concerns about the prevalence of rumors surrounding the concept of 5-day banking. She highlighted that these rumors had stirred discussions within the industry. In response, the Finance Minister advised the PHD student to refrain from believing in rumors and instead rely on direct news sources for accurate information.

Despite the student’s insistence that the information was not merely a rumor but also a topic covered in the news, the Finance Minister maintained her stance, expressing her disbelief in the rumors and ultimately choosing to dismiss the question.

The exchange between the Finance Minister and the PHD student has sparked discussions and debates about the potential implementation of a 5-day work week within the banking sector. Recently, the 12th BPS was signed by bank unions and IBA (on behalf of government) on 8th March 2024. In this 12th BPS, it’s noted that the IBA has recommended 5 Day Banking to the government and same will be introduced after getting government approval and clearance from RBI.

  1. Till any news which is talk of the town is known as rumour. Here I want to request Finance Minister that the word ‘rumour’ used during discussion is absolutely right. Further more, we should encourage the meeting participants not to pick the word or sentence so that the participant feel shameful in the meeting.

  2. Student should have used the word,” News relating to 12 th settlement signed on 8 th March 2024″

  3. The student should have been on specific topic .say for example she could have asked 5day banking .is it a boon or bane for the general public.
