The hunger strike at the Rampur branch of the Punjab and Sind Bank in the Banikodar development block of Barabanki began on October 6, 2026.

The protest is led by DNS Tyagi, the National Vice President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dharmendra faction) and National President of the Shri Ram Seva Samiti.

The hunger strike was launched to protest against alleged corruption, financial irregularities, and the branch manager’s high-handedness. Protesters claim that account holders and local farmers are facing severe difficulties that the bank management has failed to address.

The union initially submitted a 7-point memorandum to the District Magistrate via the Ram Sanehi Ghat SDM on September 21, 2026. After their warnings to strike were ignored by administrative and bank authorities, the indefinite hunger strike commenced on October 6.

As of October 8, 2026, the strike has entered its third consecutive day inside the bank premises. Protesters have criticized the absence of senior bank officials or competent authorities to resolve the issues and have vowed to continue the movement until strict action is taken against the faulty management.

Alongside DNS Tyagi, several union members and locals are sitting on the strike, including Phoolchand Acharya, Anil Kumar Tiwari, Sanat Kumar Pandey, Brijesh Kumar Pandey, Dayanand Shukla, and Shivcharitra Shukla.

The 7-point memorandum submitted by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dharmendra faction) are as follows:

  1. Strict Action Against the Branch Manager: Investigation and punitive measures against the Rampur branch manager for systemic high-handedness, corruption, and allegedly filing false reports to higher authorities to cover up customer grievances.
  2. Investigation into Unauthorized Land Mortgages: Immediate resolution and inquiry into cases where local farmers’ lands were allegedly mortgaged without their proper consent or without actual loans being extended to them.
  3. Access to Government Welfare Schemes: Ensuring that local farmers and eligible account holders are seamlessly granted benefits from government-backed agricultural and financial schemes without unnecessary hurdles.
  4. Eradication of Financial Corruption: A full independent audit into operational discrepancies, unapproved deductions, and bribery complaints at the branch.
  5. Resolution of Account Holder Grievances: Setting up a direct mechanism to address everyday issues faced by ordinary account holders who claim to be routinely mistreated or ignored by bank staff.
  6. Accountability for Past “Kisan Diwas” Complaints: Formal review of the grievances previously raised by the farming community during the official Kisan Diwas (Farmers’ Day) forums, which protesters allege were intentionally suppressed by the bank administration.
  7. Independent Oversight and Transparency: Establish absolute transparency in credit processing and loan evaluations to prevent further financial exploitation of rural account holders.
