Dr. Poonam Gupta Appointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India

Dr. Poonam Gupta has been appointed as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Government of India officially appointed her on April 2, 2025, for a term of three years, or until further notice, whichever comes first.

What work will Dr. Poonam Gupta do in RBI?

In her role as Deputy Governor, Dr. Gupta will oversee several key departments at the RBI. These include the Monetary Policy Department, the Financial Markets Operations Department, the Department of Economic and Policy Research, the Financial Stability Department, the International Department, the Department of Statistics and Information Management, the Corporate Strategy and Budget Department, and the Department of Communication.

Dr. Poonam Gupta’s Career Before Joining the RBI

Before taking on this important role, Dr. Gupta was the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). At NCAER, she focused on important issues like economic growth, international financial systems, central banking, macro-economic stability, public debt, and state finances. She also contributed as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and led the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

Dr. Gupta has an impressive background in global economic institutions. She worked for nearly 20 years in senior roles at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. In addition, she has academic experience, having taught at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Maryland (USA), and as a visiting faculty member at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi. Dr. Gupta was also the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and a Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Dr. Gupta is a well-regarded scholar with several research papers published on a range of economic topics. She also edited a significant book titled “Emerging Giants: China and India in the World Economy”.

Her Role in Policy Making

Apart from research and teaching, she is also involved in important government and global advisory groups, such as:

  • Board member at NIPFP and the Global Development Network (GDN).
  • Member of the World Bank’s advisory groups on Poverty & Equity and the World Development Report.
  • Part of NITI Aayog’s Development Advisory Committee.
  • Executive Committee member at FICCI (a leading business organization in India).
  • Chairperson of the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade during India’s G20 Presidency.

Dr. Poonam Gupta’s Educational Qualifications

She holds advanced degrees in economics, including a Master’s degree and PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA, and a Master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.

How many Deputy Governor’s RBI has?

The central board of directors is the main committee of the RBI. The Government of India appoints the directors for a four-year term. The board consists of a governor, and not more than four deputy governors; four directors to represent the regional boards; two – usually the Economic Affairs Secretary and the Financial Services Secretary – from the Ministry of Finance and ten other directors from various fields.
