Sub-Inspector Ankit Panwar of Lodhi Colony police station was detained on September 24 after he was accused of asking Abhishek Mishra, the brother of a theft victim, to pay money to close the case.
Mr Mishra’s brother had approached the police after his belongings were stolen from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during a marathon on October 24. The police said the victim had asked a security guard at the stadium to hold onto his belongings, but the guard disappeared after the marathon.
The victim reported the theft to the police, and Panwar was assigned to investigate the case. However, Panwar allegedly detained Mr Mishra for hours and demanded money to settle the case.
An inquiry was conducted into the allegations, and they were found to be substantiated. Panwar was suspended, and the SHO of Lodhi Colony police station was sent to the district line. However, the SHO was reinstated after it was found that he was not involved in the extortion.
A case has been registered against Panwar under sections 342 and 384 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA).
