New Delhi — The Delhi Police have arrested six people, including five bank workers, in a major cyber fraud case. The gang is accused of running a fake bank account (mule account) network worth ₹7.36 crore.
What Was the Scam About?
Police found 37 suspicious bank accounts, known as “mule accounts,” connected to many cybercrime complaints. These accounts were used to collect and transfer money stolen through online scams. In total, transactions worth about ₹7.36 crore went through these accounts.
According to reports, the fraudsters targeted poor labourers. They promised them small loans, but instead misused their ID documents to open unauthorized bank accounts. These accounts were then used to hide and move illegal cyber fraud money.
The police have taken six people into custody, which includes five active bank officials. Investigators are currently checking how these accounts were opened so easily and looking into whether more people are part of this criminal network. The court has not yet given a final ruling, and the police investigation is still ongoing.
The arrested bankers included Shobhit Aggarwal, branch manager of Catholic Syrian Bank (CSB Bank) in Saraswati Vihar, and four members of the bank’s sales team. The branch manager of the Tri Nagar branch, Sushant Kumar, has not yet been apprehended.
The accounts were opened across two branches of a private bank (CSB Bank) in Delhi—17 accounts at the Saraswati Vihar branch and 20 accounts at the Tri Nagar branch (totaling 37 suspicious accounts).
The 37 mule accounts were mapped to 99 distinct cybercrime complaints filed across India. A total of ₹7.36 crore was successfully siphoned and channeled through these specific accounts. Investigators discovered that a significant portion of the illicit proceeds flowing through these mule accounts was quickly converted into cryptocurrency (such as USDT) to obfuscate the trail and move funds across borders.
Action by Delhi Police
Delhi Police have arrested six individuals in total—the mastermind, the branch manager, and four sales staff members. During raids, law enforcement seized critical incriminating evidence, including forged identity cards (Aadhaar/PAN), multiple SIM cards used to operate the accounts remotely, electronic devices, cash, and jewellery.
