New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested two people — a Chartered Accountant and a Direct Selling Agent (DSA) — for cheating a private bank out of Rs 9 crore. They used fake documents to get business loans for people who were not actually eligible.

The accused are Rishi Chhabra (46), a DSA from Geeta Colony, and Himanshu Rastogi (33), a CA from East Azad Nagar. Police arrested them on May 9, but they are currently out on anticipatory bail given by the Delhi High Court. Click here to read more news.

A third person involved in the case, Anshul Ahuja, who was a credit manager at the bank, was arrested earlier and is now in jail.

How the scam was caught:
The bank’s internal audit team noticed that many business loan accounts were not being repaid properly. These loans had been approved by Ahuja between March 2020 and March 2021. When the bank reviewed these loans closely, they found that:

  • 71 loan files had fake GST returns
  • 39 loan files had fake bank statements

How the fraud worked:
Whenever a loan applicant was found ineligible, Ahuja would inform Rastogi. Then, Rastogi allegedly created fake documents to make the applicant look eligible. These fake papers were passed on through Chhabra, the DSA, and submitted to the bank.

Based on Ahuja’s recommendation, the bank approved and disbursed the loans. But most of these loans were not repaid and became Non-Performing Assets (NPAs). Click here to read more news.

Police are still investigating the case and checking how many more people may be involved.
