A bank in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district is under investigation after its staff members were caught on camera allegedly harassing a home loan borrower couple and their lawyer.

Krishnan and Anitha had borrowed a home loan of Rs 24.4 lakh from the bank, but were unable to repay the last three months of installments due to unforeseen circumstances in their farming business. The bank informed them that they still owe Rs 32 lakh, or their home would be auctioned.

Bank staff members then allegedly visited the elderly couple’s home at night, repeatedly demanding payment. The couple felt uncomfortable and distressed.

The couple sought assistance from lawyer Cauvery Varman. When Varman arrived at the couple’s home, he got into a heated argument with the bank staff members, who questioned his involvement in representing the couple.

The argument turned physical when a bank staff member manhandled Varman.

Varman recounted the incident to the media, stating that two days ago, the Canara Bank Manager and Chief Manager visited Krishnan’s home at night without permission. The couple was scared and called Varman. He told the bank staff members to take legal action instead of behaving rudely.

The bank staff members replied that they had spoken to the SP (Superintendent of Police) and even the court could not intervene. They started questioning Varman about approaching the police and even said that the police had complained to the Bar Council.

The harassment had a profound impact on the couple’s family, leaving their daughter and granddaughter panic-stricken. Anitha subsequently registered a formal police complaint against the bank staff members.
