BSNL, the government-owned telecom provider, has experienced a serious data breach. Hackers, known as “kiberphant0m”, gained unauthorized access to sensitive information, putting millions of users at risk. The compromised data includes important details like SIM card information, network operation records, security infrastructure data, and even server snapshots. Overall, more than 278GB of sensitive data has been compromised. The hackers have claimed responsibility for the breach and provided evidence to prove the legitimacy of the stolen data.

The hackers have valued the stolen data at $5,000, indicating its significant worth due to its sensitive nature and wide range of information.

The compromised data poses several risks and consequences:

  1. SIM cloning and identity theft: The hackers can create duplicate SIM cards using the stolen information, allowing them to intercept calls and messages, access bank accounts, and commit fraud, resulting in severe personal and financial losses.
  2. Privacy violations: The stolen personal information may be used for unauthorized access to communications and potential data breaches.
  3. Financial and identity theft: The hackers can exploit the stolen data to bypass security measures on financial accounts, leading to substantial financial loss and identity theft.
  4. Targeted attacks and scams: Users may become targets of phishing schemes and social engineering attacks, as the hackers can take advantage of their trust in BSNL.

The impact of this breach extends beyond BSNL users and can affect the company’s operations and national security. It may result in service disruptions, compromised network performance, and unauthorized access to telecom operations. Additionally, the exposure of sensitive data undermines national security and stability of infrastructure. This breach also sets a dangerous precedent for future attacks on critical infrastructure, potentially affecting other interconnected systems and networks.

What should BSNL users do?

Users should be vigilant for any unusual activity on their phones and bank accounts. Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on all accounts provides an additional layer of security. Cybersecurity experts from Athenian Tech recommend that BSNL takes immediate action to contain the breach, secure network endpoints, and conduct thorough audits of access logs. Strengthening security measures, performing regular security audits, and adopting advanced threat detection technologies are crucial steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
