Bank of Baroda Meerut Region orders Employees to work on Eid Holiday

In a recent development, the Bank of Baroda’s Meerut Region has reportedly directed its employees to remain on duty during the upcoming Eid holiday. The decision has sparked discussions among staff members, as Eid is traditionally observed as a public holiday across many parts of India.

According to reports, an internal communication issued by the regional office instructed all employees to attend work on the day of Eid.

The recent directive by the Bank of Baroda’s Meerut Region asking employees to work on the Eid holiday highlights a growing and concerning trend in the banking sector. Such practices are no longer isolated incidents, as bank staff across the country are increasingly being required to work on gazetted and religious holidays, often with little notice and inadequate compensation.

Public holidays are meant to respect cultural and religious sentiments and provide employees with necessary rest, but these values are being overlooked in the name of operational needs and targets. The banking sector is already known for heavy workloads, long working hours, and intense pressure, and forcing employees to work on important festivals only adds to their stress and dissatisfaction.

Although the Reserve Bank of India issues official holiday calendars, the lack of strict enforcement allows regional offices to bypass these norms, leaving employees with limited options to object. If this trend continues, it may negatively impact employee morale, productivity, and the overall appeal of banking jobs, making it essential for banks to strike a fair balance between business requirements and respect for employee rights and well-being.
