Suicide Note Reveals the Reason

Before ending his life, Shivshankar Mitra left behind a heartbreaking letter explaining the reason for his decision. He wrote that he was under extreme pressure from the bank. He had requested voluntary retirement just five days earlier because he was unable to handle the increasing workload and pressure. However, when he received no response from senior officials, it is believed that he felt hopeless and took this drastic step.

In his letter, he clearly mentioned:

“I, Shivshankar Mitra, Chief Manager, Bank of Baroda, Baramati, am committing suicide due to the additional pressure from the bank. Please do not put such pressure on other staff members. Everyone is doing their job with full dedication.”

No One Should Be Blamed

He also made it clear in his note that he was taking this step on his own, with a clear mind, and that no one from his family was responsible. He asked that no one should be held accountable, except for the work-related stress he was going through.

In a deeply emotional message to his family, he wrote:

Priya, forgive me. Mahi, forgive me.
(These are believed to be his wife and daughter.)

He also expressed a noble wish — that his eyes be donated, if possible.

Police Yet to Confirm Details

At the time of writing this, the police have not officially confirmed the exact cause of death. However, the contents of the note and the circumstances are pointing toward work pressure being the major reason.

This incident highlights the growing mental stress among banking employees and the need for serious attention towards their well-being.

  1. He had taken a very wrong decision. If he had not committed any wrong doing/fraud, etc he should have waited for 3 months for relieving. Now who will take care of his family.

    1. It is entirely inappropriate to make accusations against someone without having complete knowledge of the circumstances. Unfortunately, the current work culture in many banks is pushing individuals toward difficult decisions. Once an officer becomes a Relationship Manager (RM), their aspirations often grow significantly. Since they are no longer directly involved in execution but are instead responsible for getting work done through others, there is a tendency to exert pressure on subordinates. This stems from their desire for rapid career advancement — aiming to reach positions like DGM, GM, or even CGM as quickly as possible. In this pursuit, the human aspect is sometimes overlooked, and the focus shifts solely to targets and promotions. This kind of environment can lead to undesirable outcomes.

    2. Your decision is right but no official are hearing the fact, they want target as they most of time of his/her service in administrative office.

Official from administrative office must be rotated to branch as per rotational rule of extant guideline

  2. Bhavpurna shraddhanjali. Because of your death your family will suffer but no one in Bank will get affected. They will celebrate foundation day function on 19th and also giving more and more pressure in the name of various login day by calling personally and taking online meetings.
Nowadays Management think that Branches are not working and they started pressuring for such things which are sometimes not possible to achieve. ( for example Master stroke account and India first life insurance)
Please keep faith on your staff as prior to merger BOB was keeping and was number one in Nationalised Bank.
By pressure Neither Bank achieve Targets nor job satisfaction to employee.
I know Association will not do anything in this case.

    1. Banks have made bankers cowards. Is life that cheap.. jhonpri me rah skta tha to bhi khush rehta. Why sacrifice lie for job, why not fight?

  3. Seniors behaviour towards junior officers.is very disgusting. Specially dgm and fgm shout on chief managers.this is in all nationalised banks.shortage of staff .different type of work.msme loan.growing npa and..lack of coordination is the.main.factor.nepotism in promotion is open fact.bank officers work minimum 16 hours.they are deprived govt holidays. DFS should make investigation and make suitable policy.. to check such events.my condolences with deceased and deep sympathy with family members.

  4. The excess work pressure at the branches and callous, non cooperative attitude of higher management is the root cause of such unfortunate incidents in banks which has become very common nowadays. Unbearable mental stress to meet unrealistic targets and third party business mobilisation is a major reason behind all these incidents which require to be addressed in proper manner before it is too late.Officers also should learn the stress handling mechanism through regular practice and should have a good work life balance.Just to end the precious life is no solution rather it is foolishness and an act of cowardice which invites misery to all concerned.
Officers particularly those in positions of higher responsibility are advised to read my book ” Bank Manager as Team Leader” ( available on Amazon and Flipkart) where stress management techniques have been explained in detail.

    1. It is time to take necessary steps at top level as GMs are also telling that they are also under severe pressure. By putting pressure on everybody will not give good results. Top. Management have to introspect themselves, as the same word uses on subordinates to put pressure, and act upon realities.

  5. Don’t take such harsh step…if you los your courage to fight with all these monsters who are parasite and enjoying life with families on the cost of sucking the blood of innocent bankers then before ending our own life,we should kill all these mother fuckker who are making our life hell

  6. Heartfelt condolences. May God give eternal peace to his soul.
What has happened, has happened and can not be reversed. It is a big blow on the bereaved family members, who have been punished for no fault of theirs. Somebody has rightly pointed out above that the tragic death of a Barodian is not going to effect the bank which would be celebrating its 118th Foundation day on 19th.
I may humbly request all the individual employees, in whatever capacity they are working, should not take such harsh step and try to sort out their issues by discussing with their colleagues and also with the higher ups. Those who are in commanding positions should also evaluate their actions, as well as the way of implementation of their instructions by the officers in the administrative offices, as I believe that not always the higherups are responsible but the juniors sometimes make the life of those posted in branches as hell.

  7. Several executives are working prioritising their scores of performance, rather than scores of the branches and branch staff…. Bechara, officer in branches, cannot find time to see portal of his scores, and finally for that also they will be scolded

  8. Koi pressure ni hota bolne ki batein h.km dimag wale pressure ki bat krte h. Aadmi ko apni capacity jitna allow krti h utna kam krna chahiye. Jyada koi pareshani thi to law bne hue h. Suicide kon sa solution h. Ye whi krta h jiski dimagi halt thik ni hoti. Agr koi btmeejee krta h to use usi ki bhasha mei jbab do. Bank kisi ke baap ka ni hota. Sb wnha nokr h ye bat hmesha dimag mei rkho.

  9. May Almighty grant peace and heavenly abode to dear, Mr. Shiv Shankar Mitra, who tragically passed away due to extreme work pressure. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
We urge the bank’s higher authorities to take immediate and concrete actions to address the issue of work pressure and stress faced by employees.

  10. Why is the need for Suicide? Just do Pooja and pray to God, wait for three months to get relieved or just resigned. Your life is more important than the bank you are working..

Now, management will not be blame for your suicide.. your family will not get paid after your death what used to take extreme step…

  11. Really very tragic and unfortunate but must have accepted the challenge once accepted the job professional. Working hard in a city is acceptable rather to surrender to life, what about family and children if we are taking so hard step.It doesn’t affect any one except family and children who have to face the world.
    Sharadhanjali

  12. There is a pressing need for agitation against seniors responsible for such incidents. The suicide note clearly states that extreme work pressure led to this tragic outcome. It’s disturbing that the person behind this incident seems to be unaccountable, enjoying liberty while others suffer.

If not addressed, this issue may recur elsewhere, putting others at risk. We must take a stand to hold those responsible accountable and ensure a safer work environment.”

  13. Banking has become a worse job due to wrong policies of management as nowadays banking bankers have lost the core banking path and third party products selling has become a major issue

  14. The most disgrace is many GM/DGM whi never work hard when they were BM are asking BM to perform more.

  15. Banking job is the worst Govt job.Recently I retired from a Public sector Bank.I have also faced similar situations of slang words used by Executives for non fulfilment of targets. If work culture is not changed, productivity will not increase.
