In the video, the branch manager forced a customer service associate (clerk) to sit late in the branch. When the clerk objected to this, the branch manager locked the main gate and asked the clerk to finish the work. When the clerk said that he had completed all the work and he should be allowed to go, the branch manager still did not allow him to go.
The clerk politely recorded the video, and the video has now gone viral on social media. People are criticizing the branch manager for such aggressive behaviour.
What are the timings for Clerks?
As per a circular of AIPNBSF (All India Punjab National Bank Staff Federation), the work hours of clerks are 6 hr 30 min per day.
| Cadre | Hours of Work |
|---|---|
| Clerk | 6 hrs. 30 min. |
| Sub-Staff | 7 hrs. |
| Watch and Ward | 8 hrs. |
| Drivers | 7 hrs. 30 min. |
While there is a prescribed working hour limit for clerks, the bank can require them to work beyond these hours and must pay them compensation for the extra work. In the video, the Branch Manager was also asking the clerk to work beyond the normal working hours, stating that he would be paid compensation for the additional time worked.
This incident has again raised the issue of work culture in public sector banks. Late-night sitting should be strictly avoided as it deteriorates health.
