Heavy rains in Vidisha have thrown life out of gear, once again highlighting the shortcomings in the municipality’s cleanliness and drainage systems. The lack of proper drainage has led to waterlogging in many areas, causing roads and streets to flood. Residents found themselves wading through water to get around, and even the Central Bank located at Ahmedpur Chauraha was not spared.
Inside the bank, there was no dry place to be found. Employees had to work while sitting in water, and customers faced a similar ordeal just to reach the bank. When they arrived, they were met with disappointment as the entire bank’s operations were affected by the flooding. Ganpat Verma, a resident of Ahmedpur Road, described the scene: water filled the bank, and employees were struggling to work in these conditions.
Ramesh Kirar, who had come to deposit money, expressed his frustration as well. He noted that the bank was completely submerged, preventing any transactions from taking place. He needed to deposit money, but was unable to do so due to the flooding.
During the last rainfall, the collector had inspected some of the waterlogged areas and directed the Nagar Palika to improve the city’s arrangements. This included clearing the drains by removing encroachments. However, despite these instructions, the Nagar Palika did not follow through with the necessary cleaning. As a result, even moderate rainfall leads to significant waterlogging in many parts of the city.
This incident underscores the urgent need for the municipality to take effective measures to improve the drainage system and ensure regular maintenance of the city’s infrastructure to prevent such disruptions in the future.
