The confusion has been created as Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman directed Public Sector Banks (PSBs) to launch a focused, month-long nationwide campaign ‘Banking for Youth’ starting on 2nd October 2026.
Coordinated via the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS), banks will set up dedicated youth banking spaces, kiosks, or Banking Mitras at branches, colleges, and universities.
But the “Yuva Connect – Banking for Youth” campaign has been postponed. Initially scheduled to kick off nationwide on 2nd October 2026, the government has decided to reschedule the launch to November 2026.
The primary reason for pushing the date back is educational institution closures. Because a large portion of the campaign’s outreach relies heavily on physical programs, events, and account-opening drives at colleges, universities, and skill-building campuses, launching it in October posed a challenge. Many of these institutions will remain closed for multiple days throughout October due to major Indian festivals (like Dussehra and Durga Puja).
Moving the launch to November allows the Department of Financial Services and public sector banks to maximize their outreach and engage directly with the youth on campuses as originally intended.
So, Banks will remain closed on 2nd October 2026 across India due to Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, which is a national holiday.
