Kaizad Bharucha, the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of HDFC Bank, has officially resigned and requested early retirement. The bank’s board accepted his request for cessation from service, which will take effect on December 31, 2026, pending final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

His decision follows the appointment of ICICI group veteran Anup Bagchi as the bank’s incoming MD and CEO. Bharucha, 60, has been a cornerstone of HDFC Bank since 1995, spending over three decades building and managing its multi-billion dollar wholesale credit and market risk architecture.
Why he resigned?
While Kaizad Bharucha was the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) and not the CEO, his resignation is a direct consequence of the HDFC Bank CEO succession race.
In corporate banking, when a senior internal executive is passed over for the top job in favor of an outsider, they frequently choose to step down.
Following the retirement of former CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, Bharucha was the bank’s top internal candidate. The HDFC Bank board sent two primary names to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for final selection: Kaizad Bharucha (the internal veteran) and Anup Bagchi (the external candidate). When the RBI approved Bagchi as the new CEO, Bharucha was effectively passed over for the bank’s highest office.
Bharucha has been an absolute pillar of HDFC Bank since 1995, serving for over 30 years and managing the bank’s entire multi-billion dollar wholesale credit, risk, and asset book. At 60 years old, this was his final window to ascend to the top job. Staying on as the #2 executive under an incoming external CEO from a rival group (ICICI) creates an awkward structural hierarchy for a long-serving institutional heavyweight.
Prominent executive departures are common during banking transitions. By opting for early retirement, Bharucha prevents any potential “two power centers” dynamic within HDFC Bank’s top management. It allows Anup Bagchi to assume full operational control on October 27, 2026, and construct his own core leadership team without the shadows of the old guard.
