The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has informed that 45 NBFCs have closed today in India. RBI has cancelled Certificate of Registration of 36 NBFCs and 9 NBFCs have surrendered their Certificate of Registration to the RBI.
Explained: What is an NBFC?
An NBFC (Non-Banking Financial Company) is a financial institution that provides banking-like services such as loans, credit facilities, asset financing, and investment services. However, unlike banks, NBFCs do not have a full banking license and cannot accept demand deposits like savings or current accounts.
NBFCs play an important role in the financial system by providing credit to businesses, small industries, and individuals who may not always have easy access to bank loans.
Main Activities of NBFCs:
- Providing personal and business loans
- Vehicle and asset financing
- Microfinance and small business funding
- Investment and financial advisory services
- Infrastructure financing
Key Features of NBFCs:
- Registered under the Companies Act
- Regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
- Cannot accept demand deposits like banks
- Provide credit to sectors underserved by traditional banks
NBFCs help improve financial inclusion in India by making credit available to people in rural areas, small businesses, and emerging sectors of the economy.
In simple words: NBFCs are financial companies that provide loans and other financial services like banks, but they operate under different rules and cannot offer regular bank accounts.
