Recently, a new scam has come to light, exploiting the trusted name of a bank. This revelation was brought to the attention by Cyber Dost, a dedicated organization under the Home Ministry that focuses on cybersecurity. In a recent post on X, Cyber Dost warned about a malicious app being installed on people’s phones under the guise of Union Bank.
The scam starts with a WhatsApp account pretending to be from Union Bank. It sends a web link to users. Clicking this link leads people to download an APK file that looks like the real Union Bank app but is actually a fake app called “Union Rewards.” Cyber Dost has confirmed that Union Bank did not authorize or release this app.
Once the user downloads this malicious app, his mobile phone can be accessed from remote location and hackers can easily get his passwords and other financial data.
Installing this app could grant unauthorized access to your bank account, potentially leading to devastating consequences such as emptying your account.
Similar malicious was earlier being circulated in name of Punjab National Bank. The account details of users were stolen with the help of this app. It is advised to download apps only from google play store. Don’t download apps from any other third party websites or stores.
Cyber Dost recently warned people about two fake loan apps. They recommend only using loan apps approved by the Reserve Bank of India. Specifically, they advise staying away from Loan Me and Global Credit app. In these uncertain times, it’s crucial to be alert and informed about scams. By staying aware and careful, we can protect ourselves and our finances from those trying to trick us.
