It has been more than two months since the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) systems at all the post offices in Bengaluru stopped functioning. India Post has not provided any official announcements regarding the issue, leaving customers who rely on post office services in a difficult situation. Even the General Post Office, which typically handles a large volume of customers, has been affected by this problem.

Inconvenience and Cash Payment Challenges

The lack of functioning UPI systems has caused inconvenience for customers who visit post offices. Many individuals believe that cash payment is an outdated policy and prefer using UPI for hassle-free transactions. Chayank, an advocate who recently visited the General Post Office, expressed his frustration, stating that the officials at the GPO often fail to provide change and instead request customers to bring the exact amount in cash.

Customers Forced to Carry Exact Cash Amounts

Several customers have shared their experiences of having to carry the exact amount in cash when visiting post offices. Shekhar Singh, a customer at the Whitefield post office, mentioned the need to carry both the exact amount and some change, just in case the amount brought was insufficient.

Lack of Communication from India Post

Many individuals feel that India Post should have made more efforts to inform people about the non-functioning payment system. While digital payment systems are commonly used in most government offices, the post office in question neither accepts digital payments nor provides any notification regarding this limitation. Suggestions have been made for India Post to display posters or use their digital platforms to inform customers about the issue.

Transition from Static QR Codes to Dynamic QR Codes

According to India Post officials, the department is currently in the process of transitioning from static QR codes to dynamic QR codes as part of their payment system. The decision to make this transition was made due to numerous complaints about the static QR codes not working properly. Dynamic QR codes, integrated with the State Bank of India (SBI), have already been implemented in approximately 1.4 lakh branch post offices in rural areas through the Android mobile platform.

Future Plans for Implementation

Although dynamic QR codes have been successfully implemented in rural branch post offices, they are yet to be implemented in other departmental post offices, sub-offices, and head post offices in urban areas. The Chief Post Master General (CPMG), Karnataka Circle, S. Rajendra Kumar, stated that within a few months, by around September, they plan to migrate to a new IT solution. Once this migration is complete, dynamic QR codes will be available in all post offices.
