In a powerful and patriotic gesture, Union Bank of India has issued an internal appeal to its employees, encouraging them to voluntarily donate the cash value of their Privilege Leave (PL) to the National Defence Fund (NDF). This initiative aims to support the welfare of India’s armed forces, paramilitary personnel, and their families. Let’s understand what this appeal means and why it matters.
What is the National Defence Fund?
The National Defence Fund (NDF) was established in 1962 to provide financial assistance to soldiers, paramilitary forces, and their dependents. Unlike many government-backed initiatives, the NDF does not receive direct funding from the central government. Instead, it relies on contributions from the public, organizations, and institutions. Over the years, the fund has supported thousands of soldiers and their families, offering help during times of crisis and honoring the sacrifices made in service of the country.
Why Now? The Impact of ‘Operation Sindoor’
Union Bank’s circular references a recent deadly militant attack in Pahalgam. In response, Indian forces launched a strong counter-operation named ‘Operation Sindoor’, involving days of intense aerial and artillery defense. This response once again demonstrated the strength and courage of India’s armed forces. In light of these events, the bank has called on its staff to support those who protect the nation by contributing to the NDF.
How Can Employees Contribute?
The bank is asking employees to voluntarily donate a portion of their Privilege Leave. The monetary value of the donated leave will be transferred to the National Defence Fund. For example – If the value of 1 PL is Rs.2000, then if an employee donates 1 PL then it means he has donated Rs.2000. The monetary value of PL depends on the basic pay of employees. The donation window is open from May 15 to May 23, 2025.
The donation is completely voluntary. However, even small contributions from individuals can collectively make a big difference. It is an opportunity for staff members to show their gratitude to those who risk their lives for the security of the country.
Union Bank’s Commitment to National Service
Union Bank of India has always promoted values of national service and community support. This initiative is yet another example of the bank’s efforts to foster a spirit of unity and responsibility. By donating their Privilege Leave, employees can contribute directly to the welfare of the nation’s protectors and stand in solidarity with India’s armed forces.
