Union Bank Management and the All India Union Bank Officers’ Federation (AIUBOF) have reached a consensus, marking a significant step towards addressing the concerns raised during the ‘Mission Swabhiman’ campaign. This resolution highlights the commitment to fostering a fair work environment, promoting work-life balance, and recognizing the importance of organizational action.

During constructive dialogue and deliberation, key issues raised during the campaign were discussed. These included the proliferation of WhatsApp groups and the pressure to post daily progress reports, late-night messages and video conferences, as well as the imposition of late sittings and holiday work as punitive measures. In response, the management has affirmed its commitment to implementing strict guidelines to regulate communication channels and ensure the respectful treatment of officers. They have also committed to streamlining the purpose and scheduling of video conferences, respecting officers’ personal time and work-life balance. Furthermore, assurances have been given regarding the prohibition of late sittings unless under emergency circumstances and the issuance of clear written instructions for holiday work, with compensatory off arrangements.

The success of the ‘Mission Swabhiman’ campaign has been widely appreciated, both within the banking community and beyond. It is seen as a commendable effort to address systemic issues in the industry and reflects a collective determination to uphold the dignity and well-being of bank employees. Similar issues have been reported in other public sector banks, such as the State Bank of India and the Bank of Baroda.

The consensus reached by Union Bank Management and AIUBOF underscores the importance of organizational action in fostering a healthier and more sustainable work environment. As the banking sector continues to evolve, initiatives like ‘Mission Swabhiman’ serve as a testament to the power of collective advocacy in effecting positive change.

In light of the recent negotiations and progress made, AIUBOF has announced the suspension of its organizational action, which was previously threatened with a strike notice. However, AIUBOF remains vigilant in ensuring the enforcement of agreed-upon measures. Officers are urged to maintain their commitment to work-life balance by adhering to the completion of official duties by 5:45 PM and leaving the office promptly by 6 PM. State affiliates of the federation have been assigned the task of closely monitoring field incidents and reporting any violations for resolution. While acknowledging the management’s positive attitude during negotiations, AIUBOF emphasizes its readiness to resume action if necessary, pending a thorough review of the situation.
