Russia has issued warnings for both Earthquake and Tsunami. A powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, setting off tsunami warnings across parts of the Pacific, including Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and California. The magnitude and location of the earthquake, deep in the Pacific Ocean, has raised immediate concerns for coastal areas across the region.

Evacuations and Safety Alerts Issued

Following the earthquake, both Hawaii and Japan issued evacuation orders for vulnerable coastal regions. In Hawaii, the U.S. Coast Guard also ordered commercial vessels docked in harbors to leave immediately as a precaution. Governor Josh Green of Hawaii addressed the public, confirming that two tsunami waves had passed through the Midway Atoll—one about 30 centimeters high and the other reaching 3 feet. Fortunately, he added, “we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief to us.”

However, he emphasized that the state wouldn’t be officially in the clear for another two to three hours, especially beyond the “Big Island.” As a result, all flights in and out of Maui were canceled, and several others were either diverted or returned to the U.S. mainland.

Tsunami in Japan

Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings along much of the eastern coastline, particularly in areas closest to the quake’s epicenter, such as Hokkaido. Authorities estimated that waves as high as 3 meters could strike the region by 10 a.m. local time. Additionally, advisories were issued in other parts of Japan, and residents in coastal zones were urged to move to higher ground immediately.

An agency official, Kiyomoto Masashi, warned that tsunami waves could continue for more than a day after the earthquake and stressed the importance of ongoing caution.

According to reports from Japanese national broadcaster NHK, the waves in Japan so far have been smaller, ranging from 30 centimeters to 1.3 meters, with the highest observed at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture.

Reuters, citing a Russian official, reported that the Kamchatka region, closest to the earthquake’s epicenter, experienced tsunami waves averaging between 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet). This further heightened concerns for neighboring Pacific nations still waiting to see if larger waves would follow.

Airlines Suspend Flights Amid Uncertainty

In response to the developing threat, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines issued a joint statement confirming they were suspending departures to Hawaii while closely monitoring the situation. Flights already en route were either returned to the U.S. mainland or diverted to safer destinations, according to local media.
