The Central Railway has tested a very new and unique idea in India—installing an ATM inside a train. This trial happened on the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express and it allows passengers to withdraw cash while they are traveling on the train. This is a big and useful step because it brings banking services directly to people on the move.

Who is Behind This Idea?

The test was carried out by the Bank of Maharashtra in partnership with the Bhusawal Division of Indian Railways. The ATM was set up inside an air-conditioned coach of the train.

This project is part of Indian Railways’ Innovative and Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (INFRIS). This scheme encourages new ideas that can earn money apart from ticket sales and at the same time make travel easier and better for passengers.

How Was the ATM Installed?

To set up the ATM, the structure of the coach was changed at the Manmad Railway Workshop. A temporary pantry (kitchen area) at the back of the coach was removed to make space for the ATM. For security and privacy, a shutter door was added to keep the ATM safe and private while the train moves.

How Did the Test Go?

The trial run went well, but there were some network problems in the stretch between Igatpuri and Kasara. This area has many tunnels, so the mobile signal is usually weak there. However, the ATM worked properly on most of the journey.

Also, since all 22 coaches of the Panchavati Express are connected with vestibules, passengers from any coach could walk to the ATM.

About the Panchavati Express

The Panchavati Express runs daily between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Manmad Junction in Nashik. It takes around 4 hours and 35 minutes for one side of the journey. Another train, the Mumbai–Hingoli Janshatabdi Express, shares the same set of coaches, so its passengers may also benefit from the ATM service.

A Step Towards Modern Indian Railways

Indian Railways is working hard to modernize train travel. From providing free Wi-Fi at stations to new station designs and better food, the goal is to give world-class services. Now, with the ATM facility, it shows their commitment to making travel more comfortable and useful for passengers.

Even though the ATM is placed in an AC coach, passengers from any coach can use it. The shutter door helps protect passenger privacy and security while withdrawing money.

Key Benefits of ATM on Trains:

  1. Easy Access to Cash
Passengers don’t have to worry about running out of money during their journey.
  2. Helpful During Emergencies
If someone needs money urgently or is going to a remote area without banks or ATMs, this service is a lifesaver.
  3. Safe Environment
Withdrawing cash on the train is safer than carrying a lot of money while traveling.

What’s Next?

If this test is successful, Indian Railways may add ATM services to more trains in the future. They are even thinking about adding more features like:

  • Cash deposit machines
  • Small bank branches inside trains
  • Mobile banking kiosks at railway stations

This idea can make train travel not just faster and more comfortable, but also financially smarter and safer for all.
