Maharashtra: Tehsildar Prashant Thorat has been suspended after a video of him singing a song from the film Yaarana while seated on an official chair during his farewell ceremony in Latur went viral on social media. Authorities said the act tarnished the image of the administration and cited violation of the 1979 Service Rules as the reason for his suspension.

Thorat, who was posted in Umri in the Nanded district, was transferred to Renapur in neighbouring Latur and relieved on July 30. He took charge of his new posting the same day. Both districts are part of the Marathwada division.
On August 8, the Umri tehsil office organised a farewell event for Thorat. During this programme, Thorat sang the Kishore Kumar chartbuster ‘yara teri yari ko’ in the presence of the staff.
Thorat’s singing video quickly spread on social media and drew criticism, with many saying it was not proper for a government officer, an official said.
After the incident, the Nanded collector sent a report to senior authorities, stating that Thorat’s actions had hurt the image of the administration and broke the Maharashtra Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1979.
Based on this report, Divisional Commissioner of Revenue Jitendra Papalkar from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar ordered Thorat’s suspension on Saturday.
This incident has sparked mixed opinions. Some believe that singing a film song at a farewell is a harmless and light-hearted gesture, while others argue that government officers must maintain discipline and dignity, especially when holding official positions.
Do you think the suspension was a fair step to protect the image of the administration, or do you feel it was an overreaction to a simple act?

No, the suspension was not fair. Many public administration officials are engaging in more malicious activities, including those within the political party itself.in the political party itself.
This Administrative authority has defamed the respect of Chair.
If the Tehsildar is fond of singing then he should show his art in public singing program.
Totally wrong, singing filmy song is not crime. If he had sang a song like देहाची तिजोरी भक्तीचाच ठेवा उघड दार देवा आता उघड दार देवा. Then what would have done by District collector ?
Collector should take action against corrupt and कामचोर employees who are plenty are there in system.
What action is taken against judge when got unaccounted huge cash at his residence ?
What happens when the netas are found sleeping or playing or dancing????
Why such harsh actions are slammed over the Govt officials only????
There is nothing decency in singing a song and many people who hold responsibility posts are escaping with no punishment. I think this is a minor misconduct and authorities should let off him by seeking explanation.
This is an overreaction to a simple act of singing a song on one’s farewell. In many Organisations, during farewell, officials do sing songs. It is a gesture to say that “Team , we worked well & I appreciate it & will remember it.” It was a goodwill gesture. Suspension should be revoked immediately.
