The Supreme Court has refused to give temporary (interim) bail to Arvind Dham, the former chairman of Amtek Group, in a major money laundering case related to a bank fraud of ₹2,700 crore.

On 7th April, a special bench of three judges, led by then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, had already denied regular bail to Arvind Dham and asked him to surrender and go to jail the next morning.

The Supreme Court of India had ordered Arvind Dham, the former chairperson of the Amtek Group, to surrender and go to jail by 10 AM on April 8. This action is related to a major ₹2,700 crore bank loan fraud case, in which he has been accused of taking huge loans from public sector banks and misusing them.

Even after this, Dhami again requested bail during the court’s vacation time. However, the Supreme Court was not pleased. A new bench of two judges — Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Prasanna B Varale — said:

“We are not convinced by the petitioner’s approach. The matter has already been rejected by a three-judge bench. Now you are trying to get the same relief again during the court’s vacation. This is not acceptable.”

Lawyer’s Argument

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who was representing Dham, told the court that Dham had already been in jail for 11 months. He also said that Dham’s regular bail application has been pending in the Delhi High Court since February 2025.

But after hearing the court’s comments, the lawyer decided to withdraw the bail request.

The Supreme Court also made a strong remark about senior lawyers appearing during court vacations, saying:

“We don’t understand why senior lawyers come during vacations. The court has raised concerns about this before.”

Medical Bail

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had allowed Arvind Dham to stay out of jail on medical grounds, but this temporary bail was valid only till 7th April.

ED’s Action in the Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which investigates financial crimes, is handling this case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED started the investigation on 27th February 2024 after the Supreme Court directed it.

The companies involved in this case include:

The ED has taken action against all these firms as well as Arvind Dham, who was the main promoter of the Amtek Group.

This case is one of the biggest bank loan frauds and is being strictly dealt with by both the Enforcement Directorate and the Supreme Court.
